Wednesday July 14th, Saugerties
Boys 10-11 Lose Opening Round 12-4 to New Lebanon
With the score tied at 3 through 4 innings, tonight’s New Lebanon/Saugerties game seemed destined for extra innings as both squads
were scratching to score runs. It wasn’t to be, however, as New Lebanon broke out for 7 runs in the 5th on its way to a
12-4 victory over Saugerties. New Lebanon followed up a Saugerties error & two walks with 4 consecutive hits in the frame to seal the victory.
New Leb’s Ryan Shumway opened the game with his first of 4 hits off Saugerties starter Max Delia and would later score on a pass ball to give New Lebanon an early 1-0 lead.
Saugerties came out swinging in its half of the first as Matt Nilsen, Logan Hinchey and Delia each registered hits but a 1-5 fielder’s choice and two K’s from New Lebanon starter Alphonse Espesito quelled the early rally.
New Lebanon would score another in the 2nd as Shumway struck again with a bases loaded RBI single. The sharp outfielding of Nilsen saved a second run as he cut the ball off from going to the right-center wall
and began the 8-6-2 relay to gun down Matt Barton at the plate.
Saugerties got on the board in its half of the 2nd with aggressive base running
as Jimmy Miller reached on an error and would later score on a pass ball. Saugerties took the
lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Nick Secreto singled and Robert Trincilleto walked. Secreto scored in the wake of Trincilleto’s walk on a double steal. Trincilleto scored on a pass ball.
John Gordon relieved Espesito for New Lebanon and got the victory. New Leb’s pitching combined to give up 6 hits and 7Ks. Saugerties pitching combined for
10Ks. Jimmy Miller relieved Delia and got out of some big jams to hold the game
close, but eventually took the loss for Saugerties in the 5th. Delia went 2-3 for Saugerties.
