9-10 Softball Suffers First Loss of 2011 All Star Run
Saugerties starter Claire Filak held Northern Columbia at bay through 4 tonight, but a 7 run 5th was enough for
NLCC to steal a 10-5 victory tonight at Hutton Field.
A rare Illegal Batted Ball call by the homeplate umpire as the Sawyers were batting up 5-3 in the 4th
seemed to create a shift in momentum. NLCC followed it up in their half of the 5th drawing 3 consecutive walks and two hit
batsmen to plate 5 of its 7 runs in the frame.
Saugerties jumped out to the lead in the 2nd on a Shyanna Curless RBI single sending home Riley Cobey. Curless would speed around the bases and eventually come home on a delayed, double
steal. The Sawyers would get 3 more in the third behind singles from Samantha Schatzel (1 run scored), Filak (1 run scored) and Cobey.
NLCC Starter Calista Phippen settled in after the 3rd allowing just two hits and no runs the rest of the way.
Vanessa Brandt had two singles for Saugerties. Hannah Mawyin scored 1 run. Filak finished on the hill with 12Ks, 6 walks, giving up just 2 hits. Brandt pitched a scoreless 6th with 2Ks.

4th Inning Burst Sends 9-10 Girls to Opening Game Win
Vanessa Brandt was throwing a no-hitter tonight, yet found herself on the loss side of the
equation as Taconic Hills led 3-2 going into the 4th inning. That’s when the Saugerties offense came to life plating 8 straight runs en route to a
14-4 opening round win.
The 4th round explosion was sparked by a Niki Bach leadoff single. Samantha Schatzel and Claire Filak had back-to-back singles. Bach later sacrificed and scored Filak for the winning run. An Erin Ricks sacrifice in the 5th plated 2 more for the final tally.
Schatzel had 2 singles and scored 2; Filak: 1B, three runs scored; Singles: Niki Bach, Hannah Mawyin, Erin Ricks Kaily Collins scored 3 runs. Brandt completed the no-hitter striking out 14 with 4 walks in
the win. She also scored twice.

Saugerties 5 Northern Columbia 0
Behind another stellar pitching performance from Ashly Costello, the Girls 9-10 squad took home the District 15 Championship tonight over
Northern Columbia 5-0. Costello gave up just one hit - a leadoff single to NLCC’s Madison Saccento - and never looked back finishing the game with 14Ks and the shutout.
After a scoreless first, Saugerties got on the board with two runs in the second
on a combination of walks, pass balls and stolen bases by Darian Wood & Abby Smedek.
Saugerties scored two more in the 4th when Annie Armstrong walked and was driven in from first on Claire Filak’s double that was a hard hit ground ball going through the hole at short and
through the NLCC outfield. Filak would score on a stolen base and pass ball to
put Saugerties up 4-0. Filak finished 2-2 with a RBI picking up the only two
Sawyer hits.
Saccento went the distance on the hill for NLCC fanning 11, walking 9 and gave up just 2
hits.
Saugerties put up its final run in the 5th on a Sarah Kopycinski walk. Kopycinski then rounded the bases on a stolen base and two pass balls.
Northern Columbia threatened to break up the shutout in its final at bat getting
a runner to third with a walk and two stolen bases, however, Costello settled
in and struck out the next two and got Erin McConnell on a 4-3 to end it. Congratulations girls!
