One Run Loss Ends Baseball 11-12 All-Star Run
The Baseball 11-12 2010 All-Star run came to a close tonight as Saugerties pushed East Greenbush to extra innings but came up just a hair short in a 5-4 loss.
Jon Lezette once again turned in a signature performance throwing 4-2/3 innings giving up just one run and striking out 10. East Greenbush got its run in the top of the 1st and Nick Godwin had a mammoth blast to tie it at 1 in the bottom of the 4th.
In the extra session, EG scored 4 runs to go ahead 5-1. Down but not out, Saugerties then staged a valiant comeback with consecutive singles by Steve Filak and Dominic Gambino to set up “Pinto”, Jamie Pulver, who ripped a 2RBI double. Godwin drew a two out walk and both runners moved up on a pass ball. Nathan Donah stepped in and had a tremendous 10 pitch at bat - a battle he eventually won getting a single to drop in just behind short. Donah’s single appeared to tie the game, however, the ball took a favorable hop back to the shortstop who turned and fired to snare Godwin at the plate to end it.
Congratulations to the 11-12 Boys on back to back District 15 Titles.
Thanks to our coaches - Joe Martin, Cliff Benjamin and Jim Speirs for your time and dedication this post season.

Saugerties Loses Tough Battle to Pine Bush
Pine Bush 5  Saugerties 1
In a game of chess matches and pitching maneuvers galore, Saugerties lost its bid for a number one seed going into tomorrow’s Section 3 crossover games.
It was anybody’s game until the bottom of the 5th when a scoreless tie was finally broken by a bases loaded Zach Numssen single to center. Numssen was set up by a Jon Lezette two out single and walks to Nick Godwin and Nathan Donah. Numssen had just gotten Saugerties out of jam in the top half of the frame to keep it scoreless. The way this game went, it seemed to be enough for a win.
After a Brandon Peda strikeout to start the 6th, Pine Bush would get 5 consecutive hits, 9 total in the inning, and put the game out of reach. Cameron Long singled behind Peda and Isaac Obwald crushed a homer over the left center wall for what looked to be a 2-1 Pine Bush lead. After a Saugerties appeal, Long was called out for missing the plate and the game remained tied at 1. Pine Bush stayed on the offensive, picking up two out hits from Jack Grabeck (1B) and  Ryan Cullam (2B) to set up Alex Varsanyi’s two RBI double. RBI hits soon followed by Brandon Das and Connor Rogotzke accounting for the final margin.
Bradley Brandt started for Saugerties and held Pine Bush scoreless. Pine Bush threw the sink at Saugerties, but Peda went from being on the hook for the loss to victor in short order.  Saugerties plays @ E. Greenbush 7/26 @ 6PM.

Godwins Over Rondout 3-1
The Baseball 11-12 District 15 Champs began its bid for a Section 3 crown with a 3-1 win over Rondout today. Nick Godwin threw a complete game giving up just 4 hits, striking out 5 and also hit a solo HR in the victory.
Saugerties started where it finished last Tuesday in Catskill leading off with hits from Jamie Pulver (3B) & Jon Lezette (RBI 1B) off Rondout starter Jake Hikade. All appearances suggested an early runaway, but Hikade settled to get two outs. A Rondout error was followed by a James LaTorre single to load the bases and Steve Filak (pronounced Fi-Lack) picked up a RBI walk to give Saugerties a 2-0 lead. Filak’s walk turned out to be the game wining RBI.
Rondout struck back in its half of the first taking advantage of two consecutive Saugerties errors after hard hit balls by Robbie Smith and Garrett Lapp.  Smith scored on Lapp’s knock to cut the lead to 2-1.
Godwin picked up his dinger, a bomb to straight-away center, leading off the top of the 3rd for the game’s final run. Hikade came back strong after the homer, retiring the next 12 of 13 batters including the final 10 straight.
Rondout had its biggest chance to tie the game after both Dan Finkbeiner & Hikade singled to open the bottom of the 3rd. Both were in scoring position with nobody out as Finkbeiner ran for third on Hikade’s hit to right and the cutoff by Pulver to get Hikade at second was a hair late. Godwin came up big getting a 1-3 for the first out, and Lezette alertly gunned down Finkbeiner at the plate as Smith tapped one down the third base line. Not to be outdone by Lezette’s web gem, Pulver robbed Kyle Calageski of a hit up the middle for the force at second getting the final out & Saugerties out of the jam.
Saugerties finished with 5 hits. Hikade was the only multi-hit performer of the day going 2-3. Saugerties assured itself a spot in Monday’s crossover with the win as Pine Bush already defeated Rondout on Thursday.  Click to follow the Section 3 bracket.

A Little Bit of (correction - a whole lot of) History Repeatin’
Saugerties 14  Chatham 8
bb11-12-distchamps.jpg
Amidst a mountain of repeats (see repeated success at right), a parallel universe aligned for the Saugerties 11-12 Baseball team who overcame a 7-0 deficit for the District 15 Title over Chatham tonight.
Jamie Pulver showed that “Min” does not refer to his heart throwing 5-1/3 innings and held Chatham so the Saugerties bats could come alive for 15 hits and a 14-8 win.
Saugerties was down 7-0 before entering the batter’s box in the 1st as it once again looked like Chatham would cruise to a title of its own. However, the Sawyer faithful came back with three runs in the first and planted the seed that this team wouldn’t go quietly.
The big blow came from Dominic Gambino, fresh off the bench in his first at bat. The Dominator crushed what turned out to be the game winning Grand Slam turning a 7-5 deficit into a 9-7 lead Saugerties would never relinquish.
Among the 15 Saugerties hits: Nathan Donah 4 1B, Jon Lezette 2 1B & a Solo Homerun, Nick Godwin 2 1B, Pulver 1B, 2B, 2RBI.

Saugerties State Title Bid Comes to a Close
All-Stars-SB-Symbol.jpg
Havestraw  Saugerties 2
After going 3-1 in the first two rounds this past weekend, the Saugerties Little League Senior softball squad lost a close one to Havestraw tonight 5-2 in the New York State Girls Senior Softball final.
Havestraw plated two first inning runs off of Saugerties starter Taylor Snyder when Taylor Carretcha drew a leadoff walk and was brought home on a RBI double from Breanna Rivera. Rivera later scored on a pass ball. From those two runs on, both Snyder and Havestraw hurler Victoria Adams settled into a pitcher’s duel. Adams hurled a no-hitter through 3-2/3 striking out 6 in that span while Snyder would retire 14 of 15 batters faced.
Saugerties showed signs of breaking through as Magan Melville battled Adams in a 10 pitch at bat to finally broke up the no-hitter with double to right center with two outs in the 4th. As the game remained 2-0 moving to the bottom of the 5th, Saugerties found a spark in Melville's at bat as a Courtney O'Connor single, an Adams miscue and a clutch two out RBI single from Maureen Ball to made it a 2-1 game. Adams mistakenly through the ball on the mound and walked off thinking she had the third out (it was only 2)  allowing Saugerties special runner Sydney Dennis to advance to third base.
Havestraw came right back in its half of the 6th picking up 4 of its 9 total hits to score 2 more runs. The big blow came from Samantha Wagenstein who stroked a two RBI double.  Snyder and Donna Brocco got hits for Saugerties in the 6th but Havestraw was spared a run by a perfect 8-2 putout as Jones threw a strike to catch Brocco at the plate attempting to score from second. Saugerties picked up a RBI groundout by Hannah Bagshaw in the bottom of the 7th for the 2nd Saugerties run.
Congratulations to the Senior Girls & our coaches who did a tremendous job of preparing this team for a State Championship with no District & Section teams to play. Thanks Steve O’Connor, Bill Bagshaw and Frank Smedek.
